Another thrilling activity includes bungee jumping. There is a bungee jumping area at the X-center with a 50 meter jump over a lake. The cost includes, the jump, a free t-shirt, and pictures. The price comes out to about 1800 baht, equivalent to about 55 US dollars, but gets cheaper for every consecutive jump.

If you like the outdoors, Chiang Mai has two well qualified rock climbing businesses, the Peak and Chiang Mai Rock Climbing Club. These two establishments have rock climbing training courses and equipment for those experienced climbers that could not bring their gear along to Thailand. They also have climbing walls. There is a place 45 minutes out of the city called Crazy Horse where climbers from all over the world come to climb its 70 plus routes from beginner to advance courses. This mountain face also has caves for those interested in looking inside the mountain.

Another exciting activity is off road atv'ing. There are companies that rent out atv's for tourists to ride on the mountain trails. They offer tours of one to three day trips, as well. Chiang Mai Deals - 10 Ways to Eat Cheaper in Thailand's Cultural Center

Known for rock-bottom eating expenses, most visitors to Thailand nevertheless overspend on food, but in Chiang Mai, deals are just around every corner. The more adventurous traveler who seeks a more authentic Thai experience or wants to make his/her travel money go even further can find cheaper, and often tastier, alternatives if they know what to look for. Many other long-term visitors are baffled when I tell them of my favorite venues, where I get a huge plate of yellow rice with fried chicken, a cup of fish soup, half of a sliced cucumber, and ice water for 50 baht (1.43 USD). And that is on one of the most Westernized islands in Thailand!

In Chiang Mai, it gets even better. There is no reason why you cannot eat a full meal for 30 baht (86 cents) in this town, but I have also managed to hunt down places where you can eat a full meal with ice water included for 10 baht (10 cents) or get noodle soup for 3 baht (9 cents)!

After living here for eight and a half months, I have come up with these ten tips:

1: Take a Hike--
Forgo the motorbike or tuk tuk your first day or two in a new location. Skip the taxis and walk. This slows you down and gives you a feel for the place like no motorized transport ever can. The cheap eateries are often barely noticeable, as they are often in people's homes, and signs which whizzed by on the bike are attention grabbers at a walking pace. Whoah--noodle soup for 20 baht! Know your surroundings, and you will know how to best take advantage of them.

2. Avoid the Tourist Traps--
This should go without saying, but most people are too tempted by the wide array of options in the main tourist junctions to bother venturing beyond the action. Even in chaotic Bangkok, all one has to do is walk one block either direction from Khao San Road to find delicious meals for around 30 baht and walk away full (free water or iced tea included). Did you come to Thailand to eat Thai food or hamburgers and pasta?

3. Don't Judge a Book by...
Yawn. That age old adage once again...If you have heard it once...Ahem. Anyhow, it rings true yet again. In Thailand, the extra dollar or two in pricier restaurants is usually a reflection of increased decor rather than increased quality. In fact, the vice versa is sometimes a better rule of thumb. When you pay more, you are paying for ambience. That's is great if this is what you want, but if you are looking for better food at lower prices, look for establishments with the bare necessities. Plastic furniture that doesn't match. An absence of music. An antique television set blaring Thai soap operas. Hokey thrown-together decor. Many of these places are just extensions of the Thai entrepreneur's home, and dining there will give you a much closer look at Thai culture.

4. You Just Can't Beat the Streets--
The entire world over you will find open-air street food, and it is usually the best value in any given area. This is particularly true in Southeast Asia. Sometimes you will find the usual collection of plastic furniture out front and full service, but often you will just get a small, disposable dish or be expected to eat out of a plastic bag. If it is close enough to finger food, I tell them to save the plastic and eat it out of my hands, but of course it depends on if I'm eating a piece of barbecued chicken or chicken curry.

5. Forage at the Food Markets--
Chiang Mai's cheapest venues offer an amazing culinary adventure, and the markets are a revelation to anyone who has never had the pleasure. Pick your way through the various stalls, sampling new dishes, or hit the collection of cheap roadside eateries which often accompany traditional markets. My favorite part about the markets is they stay open until the early hours of the morning, so if I am on my way back from the disco I can stop and fill up. I'll tell you what--it's a lot better than pulling through the late-night Burger King drive-throughs in America...The best Chiang Mai deals are found in the marketplaces.

6. Compare Prices--
Do not be shy about walking in to a restaurant, browsing the menu, and then leaving. Thais appreciate competition. If you feel guilty, simply smile and say, "Pop kan mai (see you again)." Do this on your walking tours to get a grasp of the local prices and to see what your options are.

7. Be Adventurous--
Try new things, even if they scare you. You might be surprised. Many foods which seem alien to Westerners will be cheap because tourists avoid them. Also, reconsider your notion of cleanliness. In your home country clean may mean pretty, but, to Thais, clean is simply clean. If a lot of people are eating there, you can rest assured the food is likely safe. Don't blame me if you get Bangkok belly--it is going to happen to you whether you follow my advice or not. Stomach problems in Thailand are an initiation every Westerner experiences, but it is far more often the result of bacteria or spices your body is not used to rather than sanitation issues. Don't worry. :-)

8. When in Rome...
Ah! Not another cliché...Go where the locals go! This is probably the most important, and most often overlooked, guideline to eating cheaply. Many of the local Thais are living on less 10,000 baht or less a month, and even those with more money naturally seek out the best food at the lowest prices. If I want to find a new place to eat with delicious and sanitary food, I just drive around and look for a small crowd of Thai people eating outside, but it is even better if you have a Thai friend from Chiang Mai to show you around.

9. Speak Thai--
In Thailand, there is almost always a Thai price and a "farang" price. No matter how long you stay, this will apply to you as well--you will never "become" Thai in any sense. However, open up to people and try to speak their language and you may often receive a discounted price or larger portions, especially if you're a regular customer. One time at the Chiang Mai Aquarium, I received a major discount off the stated entrance fee after attempting broken Thai. "Raakha thourai (how much)?" I repeated, thinking I had misunderstood. "Speak Thai--get Thai price," the young girl said with a smile.

10. Manipulate the Menu--
Do you really have to eat meat with EVERY dish? I opted for a pad thai with vegetable instead of with chicken one time, and it was topped with an omelette so big it covered the entire dish to compensate (not exactly vegetarian, afterall lol). It ended up being one of the best pad thais I've ever had. Do they offer special dishes served on rice for individuals (always a fantastic bargain)? Sometimes, there is no apparent price motive between different dishes, and the reasoning is a mystery. If you are on a budget, choose wisely. Let's face it-everything on the menu is delicious!
And one more, just for good measure...

11: Eat with the Thais--
Though you should never purposely take advantage of this, Thais are some of the most generous people in the world. Stumble upon a Thai party and you will be ushered into a chair to be force-fed Thai whiskey and delicious food, even if you have no reason to be there. Say you are full and you're plate will be repeatedly refilled. If this happens to you, DO NOT offer to pay. It would be an insult, although, if you accompany less well-off Thais to a restaurant you are expected to pay. One night, while waiting to catch the morning boat across the river to Laos, I crashed a Teacher's Cub karaoke party and ended up buddying up with the school director. We got wasted, sang "Stand by Me" for the crowd, and he invited me to come stay with his family for an extended period. If you really get in well with Thais you may have the pleasure to attend a delicious Thai home BBQ. Bring a bottle or two of beer. If you are settling in for the long-term, you may even end up throwing a few of these at your place. Not to worry--there are plenty of places to purchase heaps of cheap meat and vegetables.

In Chiang Mai, deals are not hard to come by, no matter what kind of bargain you are looking for. Even if you prefer fine dining, classy clubs, and luxury hotels, you will surely find a value that far exceeds the money you spend.

Chiang Mai - The Real Thailand

Located 700 kilometers north of Bangkok, for me, Chiang Mai is the must see destination in this fascinating country. With its hundreds of temples, delicious food, cooler climate, and friendly people this is a city that mixes the old and new and has something for everyone.

I have been visiting Thailand since 2002, although it has only been since 2008 that I managed to drag myself away from the islands and beaches of the south. I had always wanted to visit Chiang Mai, after hearing the positive stories from so many of my fellow travelers, so finally in 2008 I decided to bite the bullet and head north by train from Bangkok. Winding its way north through the central plains full of paddy fields, and finally up into the mountains, it took 12 long hours but I will never regret it.

Chiang Mai, at an elevation of 1100 feet is a lot cooler than the south of Thailand, and the friendly and hospitable people certainly seem a lot more relaxed than their southern countrymen. From the train station it was a short and cheap tuktuk ride to my hotel.

The city was built in 1296 by the Thai King Phaya Mengrai on the banks of the Ping river, one of the major tributaries of the Chao Praya which flows to Bangkok. Over the centuries Chiang Mai has been an important stop over of the spice and silk trails between China and India, and therefore has been fought over many times, and the even to this day the city is the cultural and handicraft center of Thailand.
The old city limits are marked by a moat and wall which were built to keep out the Burmese, today these landmarks make navigation around the city very easy.

Chiang Mai has over 300 temples within the city limits, making for fascinating sites round nearly every corner, but mixed in with these ancient structures are modern buildings, don't be fooled, Chiang Mai is a modern and vibrant city, and all the modern facilities one would expect.

The city is also the gateway to the Golden Triangle, Burma, and Chiang Rai, but there is also plenty to do outside the city, with hot springs, beautiful waterfalls, and the jewel in the crown that Doi Suthep, a mountain just outside Chiang Mai with one of Thailands most important temples at its summit.

It is possible to trekking in the mountains and jungle, where you can visit and stay with indeginous hill tribes like the Hmong and the famous Long Neck Karen.

Of course its possible to party in this city just like it is down south, although its a little bit more laid back and chilled, just the way I like it!

Chiang Mai Guesthouses - What To Expect

No visit to Thailand is complete without visiting the city of Chiang Mai. Located in the north of the country, Chiang Mai is considered the capital city of traditional Lanna Thai culture. With easy access to mountain tribes and excellent hiking and trekking, it's a destination many backpackers head for each year. And for accommodation, not only is staying at a guesthouse the epitome of the Chiang Mai experience, it is also very cheap.

There are a few things to keep in mind about guesthouses in Chiang Mai though. First, there are so many of them that there is currently more rooms than there is demand. This means the prices are really low. There are plenty of comfortable guesthouses available in the $5-$10 (200-400 baht) per night range. Your price per day even at the most comfortable of guesthouses will be reduced even further if you pay for a week or a month.

You'll do better to compare prices and reserve your guesthouse room online or by phone ahead of time, or go look for a guesthouse on your own when you arrive. If you end up in Chiang Mai at the airport or bus terminal from Bangkok, many locals will come up and offer to bring you to a guesthouse. These folks get a share of every new customer they bring to the guesthouse, and you usually end up paying the price if you take them up on their offer to help you.

If you get into town without reservations, you might be better off hitting a pub or restaurant first and finding some local expats to chat with and get their recommendations.

Also, guesthouses in Chiang Mai are usually private, sometimes with shared toilets and showers though. Rooms with a air conditioner are more expensive than those with just a fan, but not by much. If you've been travelling south of Chiang Mai, the weather will seem much cooler to you though during most of the year and a fan room might be more than suitable here.

Finally, remember that many guesthouses also offer trekking tours and dinners. The owners at the really cheap guesthouses may be a little pushy about you signing up and paying for these extras, so be prepared.

Chiangmai! Chiangmai! Thailand

I arrived in Thailand greeted by the noxious fumes of Bangkok. My partner, Miss X is asthmatic and the ventolin came in really handy. We hailed a cab down to Asha's Guesthouse, near the Sikhumvit district, realizing later we got cheated on the cab fare.

We had planned to head for Krabi, an idyllic coastal haven but the train service was fully booked. And in a spur of randomness, we hoped on the bus and headed north to Chiangmai, the cultural centre of Thailand, at 8pm the next day. Tickets for a 1st class seat on a bus, with reclining chairs and blistering aircon cost 518 BHT for a 10hour journey with dinner too (congee and salted eggs).

The journey was lulling and smooth-sailing till we hopped off the bus at 5am into the cold of 11 degree Celsius. Clad in tropical climate clothes, conversation halted as chattering shivering teeth substituted words. We then took a songthaew (minivan) to Baan-Lan Sa guesthouse along Wat Pan Ping ('Wat' means temple in Thai).

We spent a night there before setting off to Fang district, a small town near the mountains. We stayed in UK hotel in small town Fang. It is THE creepiest place to bunk in. It is cheap no doubt! (215 BHT) but you will spend the entire night pondering whether are you going to get killed or robbed there. The next day, we hastily checked out of the place and hopped on another truck heading to a small village. I instantly fell in love with the place, we tried our hand at milking cows, harvesting rice, horse riding but most importantly the interaction with the people and children there is enlivening. This is the place where there's beauty in simplicity. We spent a night there at a farm, where constellations of stars peppered the azure blue sky as sunset beckons.

We made our way back to Chiangmai city via mini-van the next day. A nauseating 3hour drive back along meandering roads down the mountain in which a lady beside me puked and stank up the van. Not forgetting the additional 2 motorbikes hoisted up the songthaew and also one half in it as well. Amazing.
Upon arriving in Chiangmai City, we had the best chicken noodles called Khoi Soi. We highly recommend it to foodies, it is really addictive. We were staying at Nice Place 2, a very decent and recommended guesthouse. It was such a 'Nice Place' in fact; we parked ourselves there for the rest of our nights in Changmai.

The hours before midnight was spent witnessing all the traditional white lanterns being set afloat into the dark cloudless night as we strolled along the city-center river. Spending New Year in Chiangmai was a blast, literally. Right from where we were standing, to our front, back, left and right were fireworks lighting up the skies. For a full 15minutes, the first quarter hour of this New Year, we simply stood there spinning around in the middle of the small road agape in awe.

Shopping in Chiangmai is another experience that can't be forgotten. We headed to the Chiangmai night Bazaar, "the mother of all night market" as described by Lonely Planet. You could find nearly everything you could ever possibly wish for there, from samurai blades, salt peppers shakers, spices, Chanel to Arsenal jerseys, all at a great price; provided you know how to haggle. Always remember to haggle with a smile; in the spirit of Sanuk (have fun in everything you do).

It took us 3 days to complete the bazaar circuit before heading to Doi Suthep. The latter is the most sacred temple in Chiangmai and is located on top of a mountain. Try the strawberries with sugar and chili flaks the vendors were selling, if in season, wow!

The mountain seemed to exude an aura of tranquility, perfectly complemented by a panoramic view of the city itself. The hypnotic chanting and the gong of the numerous bells rests the weary heart and time seem to stand still as one immerse in the harmony of the place.

We left Chiangmai after spending an enriching 10 days there. Chiangmai has much to offer to the traveler. However he needs to know what and where to look for the attractions. It is not as cosmopolitan or modern as Bangkok and there are few urban skyscrapers. Life passes by slowly here, the people are all smiles even when there is no profit intended, the weather is cool, and most importantly, we feel that Chiangmai depicts Thailand and what it was before the lure of capitalism took hold. If you have a chance to travel to Thailand, spend your money in Bangkok but exhaust your energy and time exploring Chiangmai.

Chiang Mai Markets, Thailand - Handicraft Shopping Paradise

Chiang Mai is a shopping paradise for most travelers because of its unequaled abundance of handicrafts and quaint local goods sold at very affordable prices. Shopping venues are scattered around the city both at day and night; the range of products for sale is vast and many visitors to Chiang Mai include an extra empty bag to their shopping list in order to haul the bounty home. Each of several famous markets has gained recognition and nationwide popularity as the best overall place for buying quality hand-made products at very reasonable prices. As Chiang Mai is a well established tourist destination, finding accommodations and getting around the city are not something to worry about.

Chiang Mai is recognized as one of the handicrafts centers of Asia because it has a very large system of street markets and local markets that are very easily accessible. The markets trace down many blocks along bustling streets and that sometimes seem to have no end. The limiting factor in how much market you will be able to cover may often depend on how far you want to go before your feet tire out. The products are available in a vast variety including a wide range of wood work, silk products, silver art and jewelry, clothing, ceramics, interior decor, antiques, Buddhist art, lacquer work, and the list goes on...

Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is the most well known night market in Thailand, taking up about 10 square blocks centered on Chang Klan road in central Chiang Mai. It is easy to spend a whole night just strolling past hundreds of street-side stalls and indoor arcades. The Night Bazaar is a great place to shop for exotic and beautiful handcrafted goods created by local artisans and skilled crafts-persons from the surrounding villages. The quality is generally high and some very good values can by found, especially if you are skilled at bartering a good deal.

Chiang Mai Walking Street can be a very nice alternative to the more hectic Night Bazaar and prices are aimed more at the locals so prices are generally low; so much that often there is no room to negotiate a bargain. The Walking Street Market is open only on Sundays and is a definite must see because the atmosphere is very relaxed, the market street is quite beautiful and this is an excellent place to mingle with the wonderful Thai people and to find fantastic bargains. The entire Walking Street is about 1 kilometer long and runs the entire length of Ratchadamneurn Road beginning at Thapae Gate and ending at Wat Prasing. Apart from a wide range of hand-made products on offer, one can also enjoy many Thai food stalls, street performances of a traditional nature, and also some much need massage and foot massage.

More serious shoppers can go directly to the villages and factories that manufacture handicrafts and other products and offer for wholesale at San Kamphaeng. Borsang village, just before San Kamphaeng, also has many shops offering a range of handicrafts and is renowned for its unique Borsang umbrellas. Baan Tawai just south of Chiang Mai is home to a wide range of wood carving, wood décor, and other handicrafts.
Chiang Mai is also popular for the diverse ethnic arts that you can find many hill tribe shops across the city. One recommended hill tribe shop is the Hill Tribe Products Promotion Center on Suthep Road next to Suan Dok Temple. It was established by His Majesty the King to promote the products created by 6 different tribes in Chiang Mai including Akha, Karen, Yao, Hmong, Lisu, and Lahu. Those who are interested in modern shops of the much more commercial variety, there are two big shopping centers: Kad Suan Kaew Plaza and Central Airport Plaza. The latter is relatively new and less than 5 minutes from the Chiang Mai International Airport. Panthip Plaza on the same road as Night Bazaar is ideal for techy people who are looking for computers and electronic gadgets with many discounts and a wide range of technical product available at good prices.

Chiang Mai offers more than shopping venues. It is a friendly and beautiful city with rich history steeped in Thai Lanna culture. Hundreds of temples and historical sites are found everywhere across the city and it is very easy to head out of the city to some spectacular natural areas. When not shopping, a visitor can enjoy waterfalls, elephant shows, and trekking tours. Some may be attracted by the more adventurous activities such as white water rafting, bungee jumping and paintball battle. Chiang Mai Nightlife - Cheap Fun After Dark

Budget travellers and backpackers are known for their love of a fun evening no matter where in the world they end up. For those who reach the northern city of Chiang Mai, Thailand, there are plenty of opportunities for nightlife excitement, with the added bonus of it being really, really inexpensive.

Dining and drinking are probably the first things that come to mind. Fear not, the food in Chiang Mai is not only delicious and the helpings large, but the cost is amazingly low. Filling meals can be found from street stalls and vendors in Chiang Mai for less than 25 baht - that's about sixty cents! Eating at restaurants will cost a bit more, but if you stick with the local Thai food establishments and avoid the hotel restaurants, you'll still be amazed at the serving sizes and the prices.

As far as drinking goes, imported beer at the expat pubs is very reasonable, but if you're not picky, a large bottle of the local spirits will last you and your friends the night and will only set you back around 120 baht ($2.90 US). Of course, if you overdo it you may continue to pay for it the next morning.
Another favorite nightlife activity in Chiang Mai is shopping at the famed night bazaar in the middle of the city. Here you will find all kinds of foods, crafts and other goods from the region. There are plenty of bargains to be had here, but be ready and willing to haggle. A word of warning though, so called antiques here are often fakes.

The Night Bazaar has been a part of the Chiang Mai tourist scene for many years now. My first visit to the strip was over ten years ago. Back then, McDonald's fast food restaurant was the main attraction for tourists seeking a taste of something familiar to their palate. Today much has changed along the strip known as the Chiang Mai night bazaar. After some significant flooding in 2005, some much needed renovations have been done on several shopping plazas along Chang Klan Road.

The renovations have brought in more western restaurants and other chain stores. These include Subway, Starbucks and a new three storey Burger King. For the tourist that has not had her fill of Thai food, the Galare food court has been upgraded and has a variety of Thai dishes which are favorites among foreigners.

The most recent addition to the night bazaar area is a brand new five star Le Meridian hotel. This is the latest in a long line of five star hotels which have become part of the new upscale Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is now suited for the luxury tourists as well as the familiar back packing travelers.

Background of Chedi luang Temple

King Saen Muang Ma began building the Phra Chedi Luang to enshrine the relics of his father at the end of the 14th century, but King Tilokarat completed it. The chedi used to be 90 meters high before it was partly destroyed in an earthquake in 1545; it was to remain the tallest structure in Chiang Mai for over 500 years. The present restored chedi is about 60 meters high.
One of the best times to see this chedi is during the wian tian ceremony in the evening on one of the main Buddhist festival days.
The large viharn was built in 1928. Round columns with bell shaped bases and lotus finials support the high red ceiling inside. The standing Buddha image inside is known as the Phra Chao Attarot. Made of a combination of brass alloy and mortar, the image dates back to King Saen Muang Ma (r.1385-1401). Buddhist posters are placed along the walls between the windows, and cabinets with Buddha images and Bencharong ceramics line the walls.

Walking or Bicycling Within the City Walls Chiangmai Trip!

A convenient starting point is at Tha Phae Gate on the east flank of the moat, closest to the Ping River. The margins on both sides of the gate contain a host of tourism-friendly outlets, including restaurants, bakeries, pubs, entertainment places, vehicle hire (including bicycles) and the small market of Sompet. Tha Phae is also a focal point for performances and processions during major Thai festivals.

Close to the centre of the old city, Wat Chedi Luang is a recently renovated but impressive old temple dating back to 1441, which reputedly once held Bangkok's Emerald Buddha. It also houses the Lak Muang or city pillar. Inside the northern wall of the city, at Chang Phuak Gate close to the Thai Airways office is the oldest temple of Wat Chiang Man, which dates back to 1296, and was apparently where King Mengrai lived during the city's construction. It houses two small but precious Buddha images, the smallest "Crystal Buddha" just 10 cm high. Wat Pra Singh, close to the west Suan Dork Gate, is probably the most photographed temple, and dates to 1345. In addition to the main structures, its spacious sunlit grounds house an elegantly carved library, and a chapel containing a Buddha image thought to be 1500 years old, with origins in Sri Lanka.

Outside the Walls & City Environs

More ancient temples await serenely in all corners of the town. Some of the best known include Wat Suan Dork (built in 1383) with its whitewashed stupas, and the pleasantly tree-shaded seven spired Wat Jet Yod (1455) close to the Amari Rincome Hotel. Wat U-Mong, whose original foundations date to 1296, lies in a delightfully forested setting on the fringe of town, and its cool calm atmosphere makes for a lovely afternoon's outing. Buddhist talks in English are often conducted here on Sundays, and there is also a small open air zoo. In the same area of town, Wat Ram Poeng is a well-known and long established centre for Buddhist meditation, and the highly regarded courses for foreigners are often fully subscribed.

The many artifacts at the recently renovated National Museum, close to the Amari Rincome Hotel, give insights into Chiang Mai's compelling history whilst the Chiang Mai University Museum of Art always has interesting exhibits. The excellent Hilltribe Museum is a must-see for anybody fascinated by Thailand's ethnic groups, and provides comprehensive information as well as lifelike and colourful renditions of their dress and everyday activities.

Chiang Mai's multitude of local markets can provide hours of fascination as well as potential bargains, the biggest, best known and beautifully bustling being Warorot Market, close to the Ping River. The surrounding area also offers some colourful shopping opportunities. Because most visitors are on a short stay, very few experience the pleasure of exploring the Mae Ping River, which flows through the city. Starting out early with a hired bicycle along the winding riverside roads and tracks introduces you to a delightfully peaceful world of small villages where rural life goes on much as before, despite the proximity of the city. A stop for some noodles or a cold drink will usually bring an audience of smiling faces, and possibly some new friends. The organised boat excursions offer an interesting but obviously much less intimate perspective of the river.

Further out of town, and topping the list of most sightseeing options is the scenic 16 kilometre switchback ride up to the holy temple of Doi Suthep, where from an altitude of 1,000 metres, the views are stunning on a clear day. The revered temple dates back to 1383, and is reached by a long flight of some 300 steps, or an optional cable car when it is in service. Like most prime sightseeing attractions, it is much better to visit here in the early morning when the atmosphere is wonderfully other-worldly, and most fellow tourists are still in bed. You can easily spend several hours up here, and warm clothes are recommended, particularly between November-February. On Fridays, weekends and official holidays, an optional extension from Doi Suthep is a visit to the summer residence of the Thai Royal Family at Phuping Palace when the superb grounds are open to the public. On the way down from Doi Suthep, visitors can call in at Chiang Mai Zoo, (said to be the largest of its kind in SE Asia) which has an extensive collection of 6,000 animals, plus two waterfalls, and twisting roads offering nice views of the city. A vehicle is needed to navigate the wide area covered. Close to the zoo is the Chiang Mai Arboretum with a shady collection of many different tree species, and further down towards town, the main gate to the well tended grounds of Chiang Mai University, which also houses a small lake and useful collection of small shops, banks, and a post office.

There are a number of picturesque areas within an hour's drive from the city centre. Travelling north brings you to Mae Rim then westwards to the Mae Sa Valley, where you can stop at fascinating roadside orchid and butterfly farms, snake farms, and elephant camps. A "must stop" is the delightful and surprisingly little-visited Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden. Avid gardeners and plant lovers can do no better than spend a half day or longer at this extensive and beautiful site, home to a huge variety of tropical plants and flowers, including many rare varieties. Continuing on this road brings you to the small town of Samoeng through lovely countryside. You can then proceed on a loop southwards back to the city through Hangdong, a large handicraft centre, and the nearby wood carving village of Baan Tawai. A little further south of here is Sanpatong, site of an agreeably noisy cattle market every Monday morning.

คนเยอะมากต่อคิวกันซื้อ จิ้นทอด กับ ไส้อั่วของร้านดำรงค์ครับ

นอกจากจะมีสินค้าจำหน่ายอย่างมากมายในตอนกลางวัน พอตกกลางคืนก็จะมีตลาดนัดย่อมๆอีกครั้งนึงครับมีทุกวันหากสนใจที่จะแวะชมสินค้าต้องไปถึงประมาณ 1 ทุ่มครับกำลังเริ่มจะมีคนมาตั้งร้านพอสมควร ส่วนสินค้าที่เอามาจำหน่ายก็มีตั้งแต่ เสื้อผ้า อาหาร และ ของมือสองครับผม

เด๋วกระผมจะลองพาผู้อ่านไปเที่ยวชั้น 2 ของตลาดวโรรสกันว่ามีอะไรบ้างนะครับ บอกได้แค่เพียงว่า นี่มันโบ้เบ้ชัดๆ !!! (หรออออออ???)

เสื้อผ้าพื้นเมืองงามๆก่อมีนะครับ ถูกขนาดเลย ของตนเมืองแต้ๆ เน้อ

ชุดนักศึกษาก็มีนะครับ ราคาถูกๆ นักขนาด

ฮั่นแน่ อยากไปเที่ยวละสิ ตลาดวโรรสไปไม่ยากครับ หากคนต่างจังหวัดให้เหมารถสองแถวสิแดง หรือ Taxi บอกว่าไป "กาดหลวง" เขาก็ไปส่งให้ถึงที่ทันที หากขับรถมาเองก็ให้ไปตามแผนที่นี้นะครับ

แต่ผมไม่ค่อยจะแนะนำเท่าไร เพราะรถเยอะไม่ค่อยจะมีที่จอดรถครับหากไปไม่ถูกจริงๆผมมีอีกนึงแนวทางคือผ่าง !!

อนุสาวรีย์สามกษัตริย์

ปัจจุบันตั้งอยู่ ณ เวียงกลางเมืองเชียงใหม่ ถูกสร้างขึ้นตามพงสาวดารโยนกที่กล่าวถึงกษัตริย์สามพระองค์ คือ 1. พญามังราย 2. พญางำเมือง 3. พญาร่วง ในขณะที่พิจารณาทำเลการสร้างเมืองเชียงใหม่ ซึ่งอนุสาวรีย์สามกษัตริย์ได้ก่อสร้างขึ้นจากการร่วมแรงร่วมใจของชาวเมืองเชียงใหม่ทั้งภาครัฐและเอกชน และ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวพร้อมสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าพระบรมราชินีนาถ ได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินมาทรงประกอบพิธีเปิดเมื่อวันที่ 30 มกราคม พ.ศ.2527 โดยในปัจจุบัน อนุสาวรีย์สามกษัตริย์ได้ตั้งอยู่หน้า หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมเมืองเชียงใหม่ครับ
หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมจังหวัดเชียงใหม่

เป็นอาคารทรงยุโรปที่ตั้งเด่นสง่าอยู่ใจกลางตัวเมืองเก่า ซึ่งปัจจุบันได้ถูกปรับปรุงแก้ไขเป็นหอศิลปวัฒนธรรมของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ภายในตัวอาคารจัดนิทรรศการถาวรที่สวยงาม ทันสมัย เกี่ยวกับประวัติความเป็นมาของเมืองเชียงใหม่ การสร้างเมืองเชียงใหม่ โดยแบ่งออกเป็นทั้งหมด 15 โซนด้วยกัน ในอาคารส่วนหลังจะเปิดโอกาสให้ศิลปินทุกรุ่นเข้ามาใช้สถานที่เพื่อจัดแสดงงานศิลปร่วมสมัยอีกด้วยครับ

สถานที่แห่งนี้ เป็นศูนย์รวมของสถานที่มีชื่อเสียงแห่งนึงของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ครับ ประกอบด้วยร้านค้าที่ดังๆและ เป็นสถานที่รวบรวมผับชั้นดีของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ครับ ร้านค้าที่เรียงรายตามถนนนิมมานก็ต้องพวกว่าเป็นไปด้วยการดีไซน์ที่แตกต่าง และ มีสไตล์หากได้มาเที่ยวลองหาโรงแรมที่อยู่ในย่านนิมมาน (แต่ราคาคงจะแพงเอาเรื่อง) ก่อนที่จะเป็นดังในปัจจุบันนี้ ย่านนิมมานเมื่อ 30 ปีก่อนยังเป็นที่รกร้างมีแต่ที่อยู่อาศัยของผู้คนกันอย่างบางตา นั่นก็เป้นสิ่งที่ผ่านมาแล้วครับ ในปัจจุบันนี้ย่านนี้เป็นแหล่งบันเทิงดีๆนี่เอง มีร้านอาหารหรู ผับดังๆ ตั้งอยู่เต็มไปหมด ราคาเช่าที่ก็แพงหูฉี่เลยครับ ลองชมภาพตัวอย่างของย่านนิมมานเหมินทร์ เชียงใหม่เลยครับ

เชียงใหม่ก็มีสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวมากมายนะครับ แต่สิ่งที่ผมจะนำเสนอข้อมูลในวันนี้เป็นข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับถนนคนเดินที่ปรากฎบนภายในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่นะครับ ซึ่งมีมากมายหลายที่เหลือเกิน ผมเลยคัดเอาแต่ที่เด่นๆที่นิยมเที่ยวกันนะครับ พร้อมทั้งภาพบรรยากาศให้ผู้อ่านได้ติดตามดังนี้เลย

วัดพระสิงห์ (Wat Phra Singh)

มีชื่อเต็มว่า วัดพระสิงห์วรมหาวิหาร ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ที่ถนนสามล้าน ต.พระสิงห์ เป็นวัดที่มีนักท่องเที่ยวรู้จักคุ้นชื่อกันดี พญาผายู กษัตริย์เชียงใหม่โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างขึ้น เพื่อบรรจุพระอัฐิของพญาคำฟู ซึ่งเป็นพระราชบิดา เดิมชื่อว่า วัดลีเชียงพระ บริเวณหน้าวัดแห่งนี้เคยเป็นกาดมาก่อน ชาวบ้านเรียกว่า กาดลี วัดพระสิงห์มีสิ่งที่น่าสนใจได้แก่ หอไตร สร้างเป็นครึ่งตึกครึ่งไม้ ที่ตัวผนังตึกด้านนอกประดับด้วยทวยเทพปูนปั้นแต่งองค์ทรงเครื่องสวยงาม เป็นฝีมือช่างสมัยพระเมืองแก้ว ต่อมาในสมัยเจ้าแก้วนวรัฐได้มีการซ่อมแซมขึ้นใหม่ ประมาณ พ.ศ. 2467 ที่ฐานหอไตรปั้นเป็นลายลูกฟักลดบัวภายในประดับด้วยรูปสัตว์หิมพานต์ และประจำยาม ที่มีลักษณะละม้ายลายสมัยราชวงศ์เหม็งของจีน

นอกจากนี้ยังมีวิหารลายคำ เป็นวิหารทรงพื้นเมืองล้านนาขนาดเล็กกระทัดรัด ภายในวิหารเป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธสิหิงค์ ที่ผนังวิหารมีภาพจิตรกรรมโดยรอบ ด้านเหนือเขียนเป็นเรื่องสังข์ทอง ด้านใต้เป็นเรื่องสุวรรณหงส์ ภาพจิตรกรรมดังกล่าวมีความน่าสนใจมากทีเดียว โดยเฉพาะเรื่องสังข์ทองพบเพียงแห่งเดียวที่นี่ ลักษณะเด่นของภาพจิตรกรรมที่พบในล้านนา

หอไตรของวัดพระสิงห์

หอไตรหลังนี้สร้างขึ้นในสมัยพระเมืองแก้ว ประมาณ พ.ศ. ๒๐๔๐ เคยได้รับการบูรณะซ่อมแซมในสมัยเจ้ากาวิโรรสสุริยวงศ์ (พ.ศ.๒๓๙๗-๒๔๑๓) และอีกครั้งหนึ่งเมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เสด็จประพาสเมืองเชียงใหม่ปี พ.ศ.๒๔๖๙ ลักษณะเป็นอาคารทรงสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า ๒ ชั้น ชั้นล่างก่ออิฐถือปูน ชั้นบนเป็นไม้ มุงหลังคากระเบื้องดินเผา หันหน้าไปทางตะวันออก บันไดทางขึ้นด้านหน้าเป็นรูปมกรคาบสิงห์บนแท่นข้างละ ๑ ตัว ซุ้มประตูทางเข้าในส่วนหน้าบันเป็นบุษบกซ้อนกัน ๕ ชั้น แกะสลักลวดลายปูนปั้นพรรณพฤกษา พญานาค และประดับกระจกสี โดยรอบผนังด้านนอกอาคารชั้นล่างประดับด้วยลายปูนปั้น รูปเทวดา และเทพพนม จำนวน ๑๖ องค์ สัตว์หิมพานต์ อาทิ สิงห์ ช้าง กิเลน ปลา กวาง นกยูง คชสีห์ เหมราช และนรสิงห์ เป็นต้น ชั้นบนเป็นเครื่องไม้ทาสีแดงมีปูนปั้นประดับกระจกเป็นรูปดอกไม้ ๘ กลีบ และมีบราลีทำเป็นรูปหงส์อยู่บนสันหลังคา หอไตร เป็นอาคารที่ใช้สำหรับเก็บรักษาพระธรรม คัมภีร์และหนังสือใบลานต่าง ๆ ในพระพุทธศาสนา บางครั้งเรียกว่า หอพระไตรปิฎก

At Chiangmai, the northern province of Thailand, there is one temple having one of the best Siam Mural painting which spectacura painting you can see.
I'm so sad when first saw the highlight portion of the paint been damage, this has to do something.
While the temple allow us to having chanse to see this beautiful painting, the people have to aware that conservation is one of the duty of visiters.

I did photo only right side wall of the temple (when you face in to the temple) because the left side been damage until not good enough for taking photo.
This side of the wall painted by Chiness painter, I still not found his name but will try to searching and putting here later.

Loy Krathong or Yee Peng Festival in Chiang Mai(ยี่เป็ง)
In November some may wonder what is going on in Thailand when seeing travel magazine ads, posters at your hotel of Thai girls dressing in traditional Thai clothing with a beautiful floating object. That's a sign indicating that Loy Krathong is on its way. In Thai Loy means to float and Krathong means a circular floating object with decoration of banana leaves, flowers, a candle and incense sticks. All these are related to Loy Krathong, an event which does not occur on the same date every year; instead it counts on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month. In this year 2007 it will be held on November 24, a romantic night. People look forward to going out and launching Krathongs together to predict the romance future by the direction the Krathongs float. However, this season is also good for strengthening relationship in family.

Others overlook its origin yet focus on the purposes of the ritual: to pay respect to the Goddess of the Water showing their gratitude on their plentiful use of water and ask for forgiveness in the ensuing pollution. Floating the beautiful Krathong away, which is the key activity in Loy Krathong,
also refers to flying away misfortune and bad things in the past and asking for good luck in the future. Although it is not a national holiday, many activities other than floating Krathong, are conducted in this festival, such as, contests of Krathong-making and Noppamas beauty pageants, local games and performances and fireworks.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai (Thai เชียงใหม่) is the second-largest province (changwat) of Thailand, located in the north of the country. Neighboring provinces are (from northeast clockwise) Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Tak, and Mae Hong Son. In the north it borders Shan State of Myanmar.

Geography
Chiang Mai province is about 700 kilometres from Bangkok and is situated on the Mae Ping River basin and is 300 metres above sea level. Surrounded by high mountain ranges, it covers an area of approximately 20,107 square kilometres. The district is covered by many mountains, chiefly stretching in the south-north direction. The river Ping, one of the major tributaries of the Chao Phraya River, originates in the Chiang Dao mountains. The highest mountain of Thailand, the 2,565 meter high Doi Inthanon, is located in the district. Several national parks are in the district: Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep-Pui, Mae Ping, Sri Lanna, Huay Nam Dang, Mae Phang, Chiang Dao.
The mountainous terrain is mainly jungle, parts of which are within national parks which are still fertile and verdant with plentiful flora and fauna. There are many sites and locations where tourists prefer to visit to study the lifestyle of the tribal people who live on high hills

History

The city of Chiang Mai was capital of the Lanna kingdom after its founding in 1296. During the same period of time as the establishment of the Sukhothai Kingdom. From then, Chiang Mai not only became the capital and cultural core of the Lanna Kingdom, it was also the centre of Buddhism in northern Thailand and King Meng Rai built innumerable temples.
In 1599 the kingdom lost its independence and became part of the Ayutthaya kingdom. This ending the dynasty founded by King Meng Rai which had lasted for 300 years. The occupiers Burma, had a powerful Burmese influence on the architecture which can still be seen today. It was only in the late 18th century that Burma was finally defeated with the leadership of King Taksin.
In 1932 the province Chiang Mai became the second level subdivision of Thailand when the administrative unit of Monthon Phayap, the remains of the Lanna kingdom, was dissolved.

Lanna Kingdom

Kingdom of Lanna (Thai: อาณาจักรล้านนา) i.e. Kingdom of Million Rice Fields - was a state in what is now northern Thailand from 13th to 18th century. The cultural development of the people of Lanna – i.e. Tai Yuan people – had begun long before as successive Tai Yuan kingdoms preceded Lanna. As a continuation of Ngoenyang kingdom, Lanna emerged strong in the 15th century rivaled those of Ayutthaya kingdom and immense wars were fought. However, Lanna was weakened and then fell under Burmese tributary. From 16th century onwards, Lanna was ruled by successive puppet kings appointed by the Burmese kings though some enjoyed autonomy. The Burmese ruled gradually withdrew but resumed as the new Konbaung dynasty expanded Burmese influences. Taksin of Thonburi finally took Lanna in 1774 and cracked Lanna down into a number of tributary kingdoms.

Early Establishment
Mangrai, the 25th king of Ngoen Yang of Lavachakkaraj dynasty, centralized the city-states of Ngoen Yang into a unified kingdom and allied with the neighboring Kingdom of Payao. In 1262, Mangrai moved the capital from Ngoenyang (modern Chiang Saen) to the newly-founded Chiangrai – naming the city after himself. Mangrai then expanded to the south and subjugated the Mon Haripunchai kingdom centered on modern Lamphun in 1292. Mangrai swore allegiance with two other kings – Ngam Mueng of Payao and Ramkamhaeng of Sukhothai. Mangrai moved the capital several times. He founded Chiangmai in 1296 and eventually settled there. Claimed territories of Mangrai’s Lanna include modern northern Thailand provinces (with exception of Prae – which was under Sukhothai – and Payao and Nan – the Kingdom of Payao), Kengtung, Mong Nai, and Chiang Hung (modern Jinghong in Yunnan).

Disunity and Prosperity
In 1317, Mangrai died and was succeeded by his son Paya Chaisongkram. After four months of ascension, Chaisongkram moved the capital to Chiangrai and appointed his son Thau Saen Phu as the Uparaja King of Chiangmai. Chaisongkram’s brother, Khun Kruea the King of Mong Nai, invaded Chiang Mai for the throne. Facing the invasion of his own uncle, Saen Phu fled the city. Thau Nam Tuam, another son of Chaisongkram, intervened and repelled Khun Kruea. Chaisongkram then appointed Nam Tuam the Uparaja replacing Saen Phu in 1322. However, it was rumored that Nam Tuam was planning a rebellion, so Chaisongkram turned back to Saen Phu in 1324.
Paya Kam Fu, son of Saen Phu, moved the capital to Chiang Saen in 1334, only to be returned to Chiang Mai by his son Pa Yu. Theravada religion prospered in Lanna during the reign of religious Kue Na who established the dhatu of Doi Suthep in 1386. Kue Na promoted the Lankawongse sect and invited monks from Sukhothai to replace the existing the Mon Theravada that Lanna inherited from Haripunchai.
Lanna enjoyed the peace under Saenmuengma (which means ten thousands cities arrive – to pay tribute). Only disturbing event was the failed rebellion by his uncle Prince Maha Prommatat. Maha Prommatat requested aids from Ayutthaya. Borommaracha I of Ayutthaya sent his troops to invade Lanna but was repelled – the first armed conflicts between the two kingdoms. Lanna faced invasions from newly-established Ming dynasty in the reign of Sam Fang Kaen.

Expansions under Tilokaraj
Lanna kingdom was strongest under Tilokaraj (1441 - 1487). Tilokaraj seized the throne from his father Sam Fang Kaen in 1441. Tilokaraj’s brother, Thau Choi, rebelled to reclaim the throne for his father and sought Ayutthayan support. Borommaracha II sent his troops to Lanna in 1442 but was repelled and the rebellion was suppressed. Tilokaraj conquered the neighboring Kingdom of Payao in 1456.

To the south, the emerging Kingdom of Ayutthaya was also growing powerful. The relations of the two kingdoms had been worsened since the Ayutthayan support of Thau Choi's rebellion. In 1451, Yuttitthira, a Sukhothai royalty who had conflicts with Trailokanat of Ayutthaya, gave himself to Tilokaraj. Yuttitthira urged Trilokanat to invade Pitsanulok which he had claims on – igniting Ayutthaya-Lanna War over Upper Chao Phraya valley i.e. the Kingdom of Sukhothai. In 1460, the governor of Chaliang surrendered to Tilokaraj. Trailokanat then used the new strategy and concentrated on the wars with Lanna by moving the capital to Pitsanulok. Lanna suffered setbacks and Tilokaraj eventually sued for peace in 1475.
Tilokaraj was also a strong patron of Theravada. In 1477, the Buddhist Council of Tripitaka Recompilation was held near Chiang Mai. Tilokaraj also built and rehabilitated many notable temples. In 1480, Tilokaraj sent aids to help the King of Lan Xang to free his kingdom from Vietnamese occupation. Tilokaraj then expanded to the west to the Shan States of Laikha, Hsipaw, Mong Nai, and Yawnghwe.

Decline
After Tilokaraj, Lanna then subjected to old-style princely struggles that prevent Lanna from defending against powerful-growing neighbors. The Shans then broke themselves free of Lanna control established by Tilokaraj. The last strong ruler was Paya Kaew who was the great-grandson of Tilokaraj. In 1507, Kaew invaded Ayutthaya but was repelled – only to be invaded in turn in 1513 by Ramathibodi II and Lampang was sacked. In 1523, a dynastic struggle occurred in Kengtung. One faction sought Lanna support while the another faction went for Hsipaw. Kaew then sent Lanna armies to re-exert control there but was readily defeated by Hsipaw armies. The loss was so tremendous that Lanna never regained such dominance.
In 1538, King Ketklao, son of Kaew, was overthrown by his own son Thau Sai Kam. However, Ketklao was restored in 1543 but suffered mental illness and was executed in 1545. Ketklao’s daughter, Chiraprapa, then succeeded her father as the queen regnant. As Lanna was plundered by the dynastic struggles, both Ayutthaya and the Burmese saw this as an opportunity to overwhelm Lanna. Chairacha of Ayutthaya invaded Lanna in 1545 but was negotiated by Chiraprapa. Chairacha returned next year sacking Lampang and Lamphun and threatened Chaingmai itself. So, Chiraprapa was forced to put her kingdom under Ayutthayan tributary.
Facing pressures from the invaders, Chiraprapa decided to abdicate in and 1546 and the nobility gave the throne to her brother-in-law Prince Chaiyasettha of Lan Xang. Chaiyasettha moved to Lanna and thus Lanna was ruled by a Laotian king. In 1547, Prince Chaiyasettha returned to Lan Xang to claim the throne and ascended as Setthathirat. Setthathirat also brought the Emerald Buddha from Chiangmai to Luang Prabang (the one that would be later taken to Bangkok by Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke).
The nobles then chose Meguti, the Shan saopha of Mong Nai whose family related to Mangrai, to be the new king of Lanna. It was said that, as a Shan king, Meguti violated several Lanna norms and beliefs. In 1558, the unfortunate Meguti faced invasions by Bayinnaung of Pegu. Bayinnaung swiftly took the kingdom and Meguti became the puppet Lanna king supervised by Bayinnaung. For another two centuries, Lanna existed under Burmese supremacy.

Burmese Rule
Bayinnaung then organized his massive troops preparing to capture Ayutthaya. As he tried to free his kingdom from Burmese control, Meguti was executed in 1564. Bayinnaung then made Visuttidevi, one of his concubines of Mangrai descent, the queen regnant of Lanna. In 1578, Visuttidevi died. Bayinnaung then gave Lanna to his son with Visuttidevi, Noratra Minsosi. Burma allowed a substantial degree of autonomy for Lanna but strictly controlled the corvée and taxation – siphoning the available resources for the Burma’s wars.
After Bayinnaung, the Burmese authority weakened and fell under the sway of Naresuan’s expansions. For several times Lanna served as the resource of Burmese armies for the invasion of Ayutthaya. Also Setthathirat of Lan Xang sought to undo Burmese influences in the area. In 1595, King Neokeow of Lan Xang threatened to march through Lanna to invade Burma. Noratra Minsosi then decided to seek Naresuan’s supports by bringing Lanna under Siamese tributary.
The tributary to Siam was, however, short as the Siamese control was proved to be temporary.
Noratra Minsosi was succeeded by his brother Phra Choi but was overthrown by Minsosri’s son Phra Chaiyathip in 1608. Then, Phra Choi managed to take the throne back in 1613. After the assassination of Nanda Bayin, Burma fell into anarchy of three kingdoms. King Siseongmueng of Lanna who was the adopted son of Minsosi and formerly the King of Nan tried to exert independence but was subjugated by Thalun in 1631.
For a century, Lanna kings ruled under Burmese suzerainty. As the Lanna kings were strictly manipulated by Burma, the resistance was then instead led by common people – ranging from the respectful monks to those who claimed to have extraordinary powers or merits. Narai of Ayutthaya launched the invasion of Lanna in 1662. The Siamese sacked the cities including Chiangmai but the rule was short. In 1664, Burma decided to end the autonomy of Lanna and installed Burmese agents to be the nobles of Lanna. And in 1701 Chiang Saen was annexed to be a Burmese city.
In 1727, a man named Thepsingh led the Lanna resistance and successfully freed Lanna from the Burmese rule. However, the independence was short as Burma retook Lanna the same year.

Yuttitthira urged Trilokanat to invade Pitsanulok which he had claims on – igniting Ayutthaya-Lanna War over Upper Chao Phraya valley i.e. the Kingdom of Sukhothai. In 1460, the governor of Chaliang surrendered to Tilokaraj. Trailokanat then used the new strategy and concentrated on the wars with Lanna by moving the capital to Pitsanulok. Lanna suffered setbacks and Tilokaraj eventually sued for peace in 1475.
Tilokaraj was also a strong patron of Theravada. In 1477, the Buddhist Council of Tripitaka Recompilation was held near Chiang Mai. Tilokaraj also built and rehabilitated many notable temples. In 1480, Tilokaraj sent aids to help the King of Lan Xang to free his kingdom from Vietnamese occupation. Tilokaraj then expanded to the west to the Shan States of Laikha, Hsipaw, Mong Nai, and Yawnghwe.

Decline
After Tilokaraj, Lanna then subjected to old-style princely struggles that prevent Lanna from defending against powerful-growing neighbors. The Shans then broke themselves free of Lanna control established by Tilokaraj. The last strong ruler was Paya Kaew who was the great-grandson of Tilokaraj. In 1507, Kaew invaded Ayutthaya but was repelled – only to be invaded in turn in 1513 by Ramathibodi II and Lampang was sacked. In 1523, a dynastic struggle occurred in Kengtung. One faction sought Lanna support while the another faction went for Hsipaw. Kaew then sent Lanna armies to re-exert control there but was readily defeated by Hsipaw armies. The loss was so tremendous that Lanna never regained such dominance.
In 1538, King Ketklao, son of Kaew, was overthrown by his own son Thau Sai Kam. However, Ketklao was restored in 1543 but suffered mental illness and was executed in 1545. Ketklao’s daughter, Chiraprapa, then succeeded her father as the queen regnant. As Lanna was plundered by the dynastic struggles, both Ayutthaya and the Burmese saw this as an opportunity to overwhelm Lanna. Chairacha of Ayutthaya invaded Lanna in 1545 but was negotiated by Chiraprapa. Chairacha returned next year sacking Lampang and Lamphun and threatened Chaingmai itself. So, Chiraprapa was forced to put her kingdom under Ayutthayan tributary.
Facing pressures from the invaders, Chiraprapa decided to abdicate in and 1546 and the nobility gave the throne to her brother-in-law Prince Chaiyasettha of Lan Xang. Chaiyasettha moved to Lanna and thus Lanna was ruled by a Laotian king. In 1547, Prince Chaiyasettha returned to Lan Xang to claim the throne and ascended as Setthathirat. Setthathirat also brought the Emerald Buddha from Chiangmai to Luang Prabang (the one that would be later taken to Bangkok by Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke).
The nobles then chose Meguti, the Shan saopha of Mong Nai whose family related to Mangrai, to be the new king of Lanna. It was said that, as a Shan king, Meguti violated several Lanna norms and beliefs. In 1558, the unfortunate Meguti faced invasions by Bayinnaung of Pegu. Bayinnaung swiftly took the kingdom and Meguti became the puppet Lanna king supervised by Bayinnaung. For another two centuries, Lanna existed under Burmese supremacy.

Burmese Rule
Bayinnaung then organized his massive troops preparing to capture Ayutthaya. As he tried to free his kingdom from Burmese control, Meguti was executed in 1564. Bayinnaung then made Visuttidevi, one of his concubines of Mangrai descent, the queen regnant of Lanna. In 1578, Visuttidevi died. Bayinnaung then gave Lanna to his son with Visuttidevi, Noratra Minsosi. Burma allowed a substantial degree of autonomy for Lanna but strictly controlled the corvée and taxation – siphoning the available resources for the Burma’s wars.
After Bayinnaung, the Burmese authority weakened and fell under the sway of Naresuan’s expansions. For several times Lanna served as the resource of Burmese armies for the invasion of Ayutthaya. Also Setthathirat of Lan Xang sought to undo Burmese influences in the area. In 1595, King Neokeow of Lan Xang threatened to march through Lanna to invade Burma. Noratra Minsosi then decided to seek Naresuan’s supports by bringing Lanna under Siamese tributary.
The tributary to Siam was, however, short as the Siamese control was proved to be temporary.
Noratra Minsosi was succeeded by his brother Phra Choi but was overthrown by Minsosri’s son Phra Chaiyathip in 1608. Then, Phra Choi managed to take the throne back in 1613. After the assassination of Nanda Bayin, Burma fell into anarchy of three kingdoms. King Siseongmueng of Lanna who was the adopted son of Minsosi and formerly the King of Nan tried to exert independence but was subjugated by Thalun in 1631.
For a century, Lanna kings ruled under Burmese suzerainty. As the Lanna kings were strictly manipulated by Burma, the resistance was then instead led by common people – ranging from the respectful monks to those who claimed to have extraordinary powers or merits. Narai of Ayutthaya launched the invasion of Lanna in 1662. The Siamese sacked the cities including Chiangmai but the rule was short. In 1664, Burma decided to end the autonomy of Lanna and installed Burmese agents to be the nobles of Lanna. And in 1701 Chiang Saen was annexed to be a Burmese city.
In 1727, a man named Thepsingh led the Lanna resistance and successfully freed Lanna from the Burmese rule. However, the independence was short as Burma retook Lanna the same year.

Siamese capture
In 1732, an elephant mahout who was said to have powers called Tipchang made himself the lord of Lampang, giving birth to the Lordship of Lampang and Tipchak dynasty. Tipchang’s kingdom paid tribute to Ava. Tipchang’s grandson, Kawila, planned the liberation of Lanna and Lampang. Kawila and Phraya Chabaan, a Lanna noble, became the leading figures. Kawila requested supports from Taksin of Thonburi who sent Phraya Chakri (future Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke) and Phraya Surasi (future Maha Sura Singhanat) to Lanna.
In 1774, the joint Lampang and Thonburi forces capture Chiangmai, ending two hundred years of Burmese rule. Kawila was installed as the king of Lampang amd Phraya Chaban as the king of Chiangmai, both as a vassal of Siam.
